As we age, our bodies and minds change. But how do you tell the difference between normal aging and early onset dementia?
Dementia refers to a set of symptoms and signs associated with a progressive deterioration of cognitive functions. Dementia is more than just simple memory loss, and affects a person's ability to do normal daily activities.
Alzheimer's disease is the most common cause of dementia, however there are multiple kinds of dementia that can affect our minds. Although dementia can happen at any age, symptoms and signs become more likely as we get older.
Each year, there are approximately 76,000 new cases of dementia diagnosed in Canada. About two-thirds of Canadian seniors living with dementia are women.
I am certified to conduct the MoCA Cognitive Assessment, which tests for early signs of dementia.
Unlike a doctor, who conducts assessments in a limited office environment, I conduct in-home visits and use a combination of assessment questions and observation to provide insight on signs of dementia, and then produce a written report for use by an aging person and their family.
This assessment can be done once, or regularly over a period of months or years to track the status of an aging person's mental health.
Each assessment costs $325, which may be covered partially or in full by your benefits.
Let's talk about whether a MoCA Cognitive Assessment will meet your needs.
