Trina Hodgson, Counsellor
Over the past three years, caring professionals have been through a lot. Health care workers, social workers, teachers, ministers, and those whose jobs are based in supporting others, have been asked to give and give.
By nature, our jobs require showing compassion and empathy to others. But if we don’t take care of ourselves, we can find our wells running dry. Many of us who used to find joy in helping others simply can’t do it anymore. This is called burnout.
Burnout is a long-term stress based reaction marked by emotional exhaustion, compassion and empathy fatigue, a loss of joy in your work and home life, and a low sense of personal accomplishment. You might want to quit a job you used to love, or give up on helping others altogether.
As a registered social worker myself, I get it. After years of experiencing signs and symptoms of compassion fatigue and burnout myself, I started to research what strategies I could use to avoid them.
What I found was a lot of self-care 'inspiration' — but a lack of real evidence-based self-care strategies and resources for caring professionals.
That's why I did my Masters Thesis on compassion fatigue, empathy fatigue, and burnout, and used what I learned to create an education and discussion session for groups to engage with and benefit from.
Especially when stressors are work related, one of the best ways to address burnout is together with your colleagues.
I offer a two-part workshop where people learn about compassion/empathy fatigue and burnout, and discuss evidence-based self-care strategies and how the group can work to create a supportive culture instead of one that exacerbates burnout.
This workshop can be offered as a four hour workshop or as a 90-minute lunch and learn.

If you're a caring professional struggling with burnout, I offer safe and supportive counselling to explore compassion/empathy fatigue and symptoms of burnout.
I can work with you to identify different stressors that are impacting you and create self-care strategies that will help you re-engage with and enjoy life and work again.
